Die Geschichte handelt vom jungen Krieger Ashitaka. Er lebt in einem kleinen friedlichen Dorf im mittelalterliche Japan. Eines Tages wird das Dorf ohne ersichtlichen Grund von einem dämonischen riesigen Wildschwein angegriffen. Der mutige Ashitaka stellt sich ihm in den Weg und wird von ihm am Arm verwundet. Trotzdem besiegt er das verrückt gewordene Tier, das Wildschwein stirbt. Während seines Todeskampfes bemerkt man sehr schnell, das das Schwein von blindem Hass erfüllt ist. In seinem Körper befindet sich eine Eisenkugel, ist sie etwa schuld
gewesen? Ashitaka jedenfalls hat nun ein großes Problem, die Wunde an seinem Arm
ist verflucht. Kann der Fluch nicht von ihm genommen werden, wird er daran sterben. Ashitaka verläßt das Dorf in der Hoffnung, irgendwo einen Weg zu finden den Fluch loszuwerden. Nach langer Reise findet er an einem Bach zwei verwundete Männer und hilft ihnen in ihr Dorf zurück zu kommen. In dem Dorf wird Eisenerz verarbeitet, dem entsprechend ist die Natur rund um das Dorf weitestgehend zerstört. Alles was sich verbrennen läßt wurde abgeholzt. Ashitaka wird sehr freundlich in dem Dorf aufgenommen. Er sieht, wie wichtig die Arbeit mit dem Erz für die Menschen dort ist. Die Herrin des Dorfes achtet darauf, das auch Frauen und sogar kranke Menschen voll integriert sind. Jeder hat seine Aufgabe und verrichtet sie gern. Die Zerstörung des Waldes rundherum bringt aber auch große Probleme mit sich. Den Wolfsgöttern gefällt die Sache gar nicht. Sie leben im Wald des großen Waldgottes und fürchten um ihre Existenz. Zu den Wölfen gehört auch ein Menschenmädchen. Sie heißt San und wurde von Wölfen großgezogen. Eines
Nachts greifen San und die Wolfsgötter das Dorf an. Ashitaka ist völlig fasziniert von dem Mädchen. Sie kämpft mit aller Kraft und wird doch von den verängstigten Dorfbewohnern in die Enge getrieben. Ashitaka greift ein und rettet ihr damit das Leben. Sein verfluchter Arm entwickelt in dieser Situation übermenschliche Kräfte, obwohl er angeschossen wird schafft er es noch mit San ins Gelände zu flüchten. San hasst alle Menschen, doch Ashitaka rührt ihr Herz. Erstens hat er sie gerettet und zweitens sagt er ihr, das er sie hübsch
findet und zwar genau in dem Moment wo sie ihn eigentlich töten will. Der schwer
verwundete Ashitaka und das Wolfsmädchen San haben sich nun also kennengelernt. Weiß sie vielleicht, was man gegen Ashitaka´s Fluch tun kann? Werden beide einen Weg finden, den Frieden zwischen dem Wald und den Dorfbewohnern wieder herzustellen?
The story is about a young man, called Ahitaka. He lives in a small and peaceful village in medieval Japan. One day and without an obvious reason, the village is attacked by a huge wild boar. The fearless Ahitaka tries to restrain it and gets an awful wound on his arm. Nevertheless, he defeats the crazy wild boar. During it´s death throes, it´s obvious how much the wild boar hates human beings. Inside of it´s stomach, the people find an iron ball, maybe the wild boar went crazy because of this? In any case, Ashitaka has a huge problem now. The wound on his arm is cursed. If he doesn´t find a way to get rid of it, he´ll die on it. With hope to find out how to eliminate the curse, Ashitaka leaves the village. After a long journey, he finds two wounded men on a river and helps them to get home. In their village, the people work with iron ore. According to that, all the natur around the village is more or less destroyed. All the wood was felled in order to process the iron ore. Ashitaka is friendly welcomed. He sees how important the work with ore is for the people over here. The mayoress of the village takes good care of the inhabitants. Everybody, men, women and even invalids are integrated. Each has it´s task. However, the destruction of the wood also causes huge trouble. The wolf-gods don´t like, how the poeple maltreat the nature. They live in the forest of the huge forest-god and fear about their existence. A human girl belongs to the wolf pack. Her name is San and she was raised up by them. One night, San and the wolf-gods attack the village. Ashitaka is totally faszinated about that girl. Unfortunately although she fights with all her power, she is drived into a corner by the frightened village. Ashitaka interferes and safes San´s life. His cursed arm generates superhuman powers in this situation. Even though he´s struck by a bullet, he manages to escape with the girl. San hates all human beings but Ashitaka affects her heart. He firstly safed her and secondly tells her how pretty she is, and that at the moment she actually wanted to kill him. The badly wounded Ashitaka and wolf-girl San decide some kind of armistice. Does San possibly know how to get rid of the curse? Will both find a way to end the war between the forest and the ore-village?
