Wie es sich für ein SciFi Spektakel gehört, spielt Gundam SEED in der Zukunft. Diese Zeit wird Cosmic Ära genannt und in ihr gibt es zwei Sorten von Menschen. Die einen sind die Naturals, sie sind vergleichbar mit normalen Leuten von heute. Die anderen sind Coordinators, genetisch verbesserte Menschen. Coordinators sind "stabiler", widerstandsfähiger gegen Hitze, Krankheiten und so weiter. Auch wird ihnen eine höhere Lernfähigkeit nachgesagt. Die Naturals leben nach wie vor auf der Erde, die Coordinators aber leben im Weltraum in einer Kolonie namens PLANT. Zwischen beiden herrschen diverse Missverständnisse, was zu Konflikten und letztendlich zum Krieg führt. Die Naturals haben zum Beispiel eine gewisse Furcht vor den "verbesserten Menschen". Die Coordinators hingegen fühlen sich in ihrer Colonie als Vertriebene und Unterdrückte. An der Stelle, wo die Geschichte ansetzt, herrscht der Krieg schon eine ganze Weile und hat viele Opfer gefordert, was die Fronten kräftig verhärtet hat. In diesem Krieg werden vom PLANT Militär, genannt ZAFT, Mobile Suits (Riesengroße Kampfroboter, in denen ein Mensch sitzt um das Gerät zu steuern) zum Kampf eingesetzt. Die Coordinators sind äußerst geschickt im Umgang mit diesen Geräten. Da aber auch die Erde diverse Kriegsmaschinerie zu bieten hat, sind die Kräfte mehr oder weniger ausgeglichen, so das es scheint, als könne der Krieg ewig weitergehen.
Es gibt nur wenige neutrale Zonen, in denen man noch friedlich und ohne Angst leben kann. Orb ist ein großes unabhängiges Emirat auf der Erde, das sich aus dem Krieg raushält. Es legt großen Wert darauf, das das auch so bleibt. In Heliopolis, einer Kolonie von Orb, lebt Kira Yamato. Er ist ein ganz normaler Schüler, mit einem normalen Leben und normalen Freunden und doch gibt es da etwas besonderes. Kira ist ein Coordinator, das hat ihn allerdings noch nie wirklich gestört. Er ist im neutralen Gebiet unter Naturals aufgewachsen und hatte noch nie im entferntesten Lust sich am Krieg zu beteiligen. Er ist friedlich, freundlich, zuverlässig und bei seinen Freunden sehr beliebt.
Auf eine Art ist aber sogar in Heliopolis der Frieden trügerisch. Immerhin befinden sich hier in einem Versteck einige der besten Mobile Suit Modelle der Erdallianz. ZAFT hat davon Wind bekommen, stürmt das Gebiet und schickt seine besten Piloten um die Kampfmaschinen in die Gewalt der Coordinators zu bringen. Damit beginnt die Geschichte, denn Kira und seine Freunde werden ungewollt in das Gefecht um die Mobile Suits hineingezogen. Während Kira´s Freunde sich in Sicherheit bringen können, flüchtet Kira direkt durch das kriegerische Chaos und landet genau dort, wo die Mobile Suits stehen. Dort kommt es zu einem äußerst schicksalhafen Zusammentreffen. Einer der Elite-Piloten von ZAFT, die die Mobile Suits abholen sollen, ist Athrun Zala. Kira kann seinen Augen kaum trauen, denn Athrun und er waren als Kinder die besten Freunde und als sie voneinander getrennt wurden hatten sie sich geschworen, den Krieg niemals zu unterstützen.
Das Treffen ist nur kurz, Athrun verschwindet mit dem vorletzten Mobile Suit. Ein Mobile Suit ist also noch da. Murrue Ramius von der Erdallianz gelingt es, Kira zur Rettung in das Gerät zu stoßen. Leider kann sie es aber nicht bedienen. Durch die ganze Panik und einfach aus Angst um seine Freunde erwachen in Kira die Kräfte der Coordinators. Er schafft es auf wundersame Weise, das Mobile Suit zu steuern. Um seine Freunde zu retten beginnt er seinesgleichen, die Coordinators zu bekämpfen. Leider ist die Colonie Heliopolis aber nicht mehr zu retten. Sie wird von ZAFT zerstört. Die Zivilisten Kira und seine Freunde, Murrue Ramius, sowie andere Überlebende der Katastrophe finden in einem militärischen Kampfraumschiff der Erde Zuflucht. Es heißt Archangel. Das Schiff nimmt mit den geretteten Zivilisten und dem geretteten Mobile Suit, das anscheinend nur Kira steuern kann, Kurs zur Mondbasis. ZAFT ist natürlich nicht glücklich über diesen Zustand, sie wollen auch das letzte Mobile Suit für sich haben. Da das Militär seine Freunde nicht gehen läßt, fühlt sich Kira gezwungen von nun an zu kämpfen und das obwohl er den Krieg mehr als hasst. Er kämpft für die Naturals obwohl er ein Coordinator ist und letztendlich wendet er sich dadurch gegen seine eigene Art. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, das sein bester Freund aus der Kinderzeit ganz offensichtlich für die andere Seite kämpft und es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis sie sich gegenüberstehen. Es kann sogar passieren, das die beiden versuchen müssen sich gegenseitig zu töten. Wird Kira diesem Druck standhalten? Wer in diesem Krieg ist denn eigentlich böse und wer nicht? Hat überhaupt irgendeine Seite Recht? Fest steht, das beide Seiten eine plausible Begründung für die Fortsetzung des schrecklichen Krieges haben, aber kann ein Krieg so denn jemals ein Ende finden? Die nächste interessante Frage wäre dann noch, warum Kira bei den Naturals aufgewachsen ist obwohl er ein Coordinator ist. Das Drama beginnt...
As it ought to be done, this SciFi spectacle takes place in the future. This future is called Cosmic Era and there exist two sorts of human beeings. On the one hand, there are the Naturals which are comparable to normal humans from the present time. On the other hand, there are genetic improved humans, the Coordinators. Coordinators are more stable, they can withstand more heat and don´t get ill so easy. People say they can learn much faster and better than the Naturals and so forth. The Naturals still live on earth while the Coordinators live in an outer space colony named PLANT. There are lots of misunderstandings between the two sorts of menkind, which leads to conflicts and in the end to war. The Naturals for example fear the "improved humans". The Coordinators on the other hand feel like oppressed expellees in their colony. Our story starts at a time, where the war already lasts a good while and is in full swing. In that war, the PLANT army called ZAFT, uses Mobile Suits (giant fight-robots, one human sits inside to navigate it). The Coordinators are quite proficiently as pilots of these machines. But earth military also possesses lots of good weapons, so the military power of both is more or less balanced. At this time, it seems like the war could last forever.
There are only few neutral zones, where humans can live peaceful and without fear. Orb is a huge and independent emirate on earth, which refuses the war. The main character of the story, Kira Yamato, lives in the neutral Orb-colony Heliopolis. He´s a normal student with a normal life and normal friends, but there´s still something special about him. Kira is a Coordinator. But that never bothered him. He grew up in the neutral zone between Naturals and never felt any intention to get involved in the war. He is pacifically, friendly, reliably and well-liked by his friends. However, the peace is illusive. Some of the best Mobile Suits from the earth-alliance are hidden in Heliopolis. ZAFT somehow gets knowledge of that fact, attacks the area and sends their best pilots in order to steal the Mobile Suits. This is, how the story begins. Unintendedly Kira and his friends are at the location where the fray about the Mobile Suits takes place. While Kira´s friends find a save place, Kira flees directly through the warlike chaos to the place where the mobile suits are preserved. This is quite fateful, because one of ZAFT´s pilots is Athrun Zala. Kira and Athrun are childhood friends and at the moment they were separate from each other, they took the vow to never support the war. However, their meeting is short, Athrun vanishes with the penultimate Mobile Suit. That means one is still there. Murrue Ramius from the earth-alliance rescues Kira, she pushes him in the last Mobile Suit but cannot handle it. Out of all the panic, Kira´s Coordinator-powers awake inside of him. He manages to navigate the Mobile Suit in a wondrous way. In order to save his friends, he now starts to fight against his equals, the Coordinators. Unfortunately, Heliopolis is beyond redemption. It get´s destroyed by ZAFT. The civilians Kira, his friends and some other survivors of the catastrophe get saved from a military spaceship of the earth-alliance. The ship is called Archangel. Together with Murrue Ramius, all the civilians and the saved Mobile Suit, which can only be navigated by Kira, the Archangel heads for the Moon-base. ZAFT of course isn´t happy about the fact, that one Mobile Suit is still possessed by the Naturals. At that time, the earth-alliance decides that Kira and his friends have to stay at the army for now. Kira hates the war and doesn´t want to fight but in order to protect his friends, he feels forced to fight. He fights for the Naturals although he´s a Coordinator, that means to fight against his own kind. He also has to fight against his childhood friend who obviously supports the Coordinators. It´s quite possible, that the friends will have to kill each other if they ever stand face to face again. Will Kira be able to endure this pressure? Who in this war is evil and who not? Who is right and who is wrong? Fact is that both sides, the Naturals and the Coordinators, have their reasons to continue this terrible war. But how can a war ever end at that rate? Another interesting question is, why Kira grew up between Naturals although he´s a Coordinator? The drama starts...
